Primach Support Groups

There are two support groups under Primach for those living with HIV/AIDS.  We have one in each of our target areas, Kabanana and Mwapona.

These are groups of people who are very open about their status, and want to encourage others to be the same.  They are leading the community by example to show that it is possible to live a normal life with this virus.

Objectives

To help the group members to work together to empower themselves economically through garden and poultry projects.

  • To improve nutrition for people living with HIV/AIDS and children they look after.

  • To support children to start and remain in school as a way of empowering them

  • Ensure that children have decent shelter and a good home environment

  • To offer psycho-socio counseling to both people living with HIV/AIDS and children

  • To broaden their knowledge on HIV/AIDS and its management through operating regular classes

  • To encourage a spirit of community by forming support groups to solve their own problems

  • To encourage families to take ownership of the children that are left behind so that they do not end up on the street

Garden Project

The garden project is serving about 60 support group members, as such it needs expansion so that the project is able grow cash crops and also meet the nutritional needs for the group and their families. It is hoped that at full production the garden should be able to feed these families and also build the financial reserves for the eventual child support with school, clothing, shelter, etc

We have made a catalogue of 'gifts' of supplies and tools to help the Lilato HIV Support Group in their garden project.  If you would like to contribute to the purchase of any of these gifts the catalogue can be found here.

Poultry Farming

To diversify the organization has also decided to start two poultry projects in an effort to broaden the revenue base and supplement on nutritional needs. The idea is to run a broiler and layers chicken projects so that we meet the market expectation.

Project Management Training

Primach ensures that before the beneficiaries are given resources to implement any project they are given the necessary training on how to manage and develop the projects. Such trainings are also continuous throughout the life of a project and to ensure disease control and management.

Information Empowerment

Primach has classes running were we teach the support groups and a number of  topics that range from basic hygiene practices, facts on HIV/AIDS, will writing, home management and child care and support. This is one activity that has proved to be very effective in raising awareness and building of self esteem through breaking the silence. As requested by the group members we have started running English classes as well.
